IPI in "Sulabh India" Newsletter
The "Distinguished Visitors" section of the newsletter “Sulabh India” features a photograph of John Butman, Anna Weiss, and Delhi-based IPI affiliate Mridu Khullar Relph as the trio is welcomed to Sulabh International with shawls and garlands. Idea Platforms traveled to China and India in July 2011 to conduct research for The Idea Entrepreneurs by John Butman, which will be published by Harvard Business Review Press in 2013. While in Delhi, the research team toured Sulabh International, a human rights organization that strives for social reform—particularly the elimination of manual scavenging in India, and interviewed the founder, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak. Dr. Pathak's sanitation work will be featured in The Idea Entrepreneurs, one of many international stories.
Higher Ambition a Best Book of 2011
strategy + business has named Higher Ambition: How Great Leaders Create Economic and Social Value by Beer, Eisenstat, Foote, Fredberg, and Norrgren one of its Best Business Books 2011: Ethics and Aspirations. James O'Toole, who reviewed the category, reports that "the book is significant....because it accurately reflects the way that many leaders of large multinationals demonstrate their social consciousness: They assert it."
And Higher Ambition is in good company: Starbuck's founder and CEO Howard Schultz's book, Onward, was also one of the three titles selected in the Ethics and Aspirations category. IPI collaborated with the five-author team from TruePoint Consulting on Higher Ambition.
Becoming the Best is Launched!
Idea Platforms is thrilled to announce that Richard M. Schulze, the legendary founder of Best Buy, has privately published his first book, Becoming the Best: A Journey of Passion, Purpose, and Perseverance. Becoming the Best chronicles Schulze’s journey of founding Best Buy, the contributions made by employees, family, and friends who were indispensable to the company’s extraordinary growth and success, and the many lessons learned as Best Buy became the world’s largest consumer electronics firm.
Idea Platforms, Inc. worked with Schulze to develop Becoming the Best, and to package the book. IPI helped create a paperback version, an abridged audio book, a digital book available in three file formats, and a limited edition hard cover version that is cloth-bound and hand-numbered.
Paperback Edition of MVCG Now Available
Penguin has released a paperback edition of Mastering the VC Game: A Venture Capital Insider Reveals How to Get from Start-up to IPO on Your Terms by Jeff Bussgang. The book continues to sell steadily, as aspiring and seasoned entrepreneurs rush to bookstores (or their mobile devices) to purchase the title.
Bussgang, a serial entrepreneur and partner at Flybridge Capital, interviewed nearly 20 successful venture capitalists and founders about their start-up experiences for this comprehensive guide to entrepreneurship. IPI collaborated with Bussgang on his debut book.
Higher Ambition is Released
Higher Ambition: How Great Leaders Create Economic and Social Value, an IPI collaboration with Mike Beer, Russ Eisenstat, Nathaniel Foote, Tobias Fredberg, and Flemming Norrgren — all of TruePoint Consulting — is now available in stores. Published by Harvard Business Review Press, the five-author book explores how certain business leaders create both wealth and worth for their customers, employees, shareholders, and communities. Driven by a higher ambition, these CEOs pursue sustainable economic value and impactful social value, and through interviews with 36 of these leaders, the authors detail the thinking and practices that help these men and women win on all fronts.
And positive reviews are rolling in. After reading “this carefully researched and well-written book”, Bob Waterman, co-author of In Search of Excellence, concludes that “leading with higher ambition is not just an option but a necessity for success in tomorrow’s corporate world.”
The Idea Entrepreneurs Goes International
IPI's John Butman and Anna Weiss traveled around the world to China and India to conduct research for The Idea Entrepreneurs, which examines how people with personal fascinations create long-lasting social change. While in Beijing and Delhi, John and Anna met with and interviewed idea entrepreneurs who are tackling issues ranging from sanitation, tiger preservation, and corruption in India to environmentalism, education, and free speech in China. Over a period of two weeks, they visited countless bookstores, investigated issues of infrastructure, and spoke to as many people as possible — often while traveling in rickshaws, taxis, and buses. They also found time to hike the Great Wall and explore the winding streets of Old Delhi.
John Butman is the author of The Idea Entrepreneurs, although in the spirit of collaborative writing, the book has been collectively developed by the Idea Platforms team. It will be published by Harvard Business Review Press in 2012.
The Boston Globe Reports on TEC
The March 10, 2011 edition of The Boston Globe features “Surviving Winter’s Darkness,” an interview with Dr. John Sharp, author of The Emotional Calendar. In it, Dr. Sharp explains to journalist Carol Stocker how to better cope indoors and out during the coldest months, and why Bostonians actually benefit from seasonal change. IPI worked with Dr. Sharp to develop The Emotional Calendar.
IPI Goes to BEA 2011
For the third year in a row, John Butman and Anna Weiss of Idea Platforms attended BookExpo America (BEA) at the Javits Center in New York City. While there, IPI met with agents and editors, gathered recently-released industry data, and gained insight into the newest, most pressing trends in publishing. BEA is the leading publishing industry trade show in North America and was attended by over 21,000 people this year.
Idea Platforms is Moving Up!
As of May 1, 2011, we will be located in our new office space on the thirteenth floor of One Main Street in Cambridge, MA. We will be sharing our new and more easily accessible space with our colleagues and collaborators CFAR.
IPI Visits the Luxury Summit
IPI collaborators John and Anna attended the American Express Luxury Summit in Deer Valley, Utah. The Luxury Summit brings together top leaders from the luxury world to talk about the state of the market and the future of luxury. The theme of this year’s summit was the New Think: it will be immortalized in a White Paper and newsletter produced by IPI.
